Description

Watendlath Beck runs for two kilometres north from the tarn and hamlet that share the first part of its name before plunging through Mossmire Coppice and Hogs Earth to Lodore Falls, celebrated by poet Robert Southey in a famous paean to one of the most spectacular cascades in the Lake District. In this tranquil scene painted by Alfred, the liquid surface of Derwentwater, seen from the perspective of blowing reeds in the foreground, mirrors the blues and whites of a sky clearing from the south-west. The gold and white streak of the upper Falls is visible to the left of the downfall of Shepherd’s Crag.
