Description

The Jaws of Borrowdale, between Castle Crag and King’s How, form a formidable gorge for the River Derwent as it heads north towards Derwentwater. Here, Alfred has painted the birch trees near the river and the gorse nearby in the bright flush of spring, with new leaves green in the trees’ canopies. Behind them , the eastern cliffs of the Jaws rise up to a sky of torn clouds with a hint of blue.
