Description
In winter conditions of anticyclonic high pressure and low temperatures, the fells of the Lake District can hold snow and ice for weeks. At times like these, the higher tarns – and sometimes even the valley lakes - freeze over. Tarn Hows near Coniston, seen here looking north-east towards Helvellyn, the Fairfield Horseshoe and Red Screes, is seen here in William’s vivid painting in such conditions on a sunlit afternoon.
A huge crowd of skaters throngs the ice, yet the people are dwarfed by the distant snow-clad mountains, and by a shoulder of fellside dramatically cut across by swathes of grey rock, green grass, white snow and russet bracken. William’s treatment of the fellside and the distant skaters give an energy to this painting, yet the cloud-filled sky and the dark green of the pines and larches gives his composition a real serenity.
Set within a subtle blue wash frame.
