Description

Painted on a serene day in early autumn, our eyes are drawn through the trees in the foreground to the distinctive outline of Wray Castle (at centre left) and, above the blue of Windermere, the far distant spire of St.Mary’s Church in Ambleside pointing upwards to the head of Scandale, Red Screes, and the sunlit eastern half of the Fairfield Horseshoe.

Wray Castle was built in 1840 by a retired Liverpool surgeon. It was given to the National Trust in 1929, and the Trust currently run it as a visitor attraction.
